Actress known for her saucer-eyed roles in '3 Women,' 'Nashville'

Duvall's performance in 'The Shining' is considered one of the most iconic horror performances of all time

Shelley Duvall, the saucer-eyed, rail-thin actress who starred in seven films directed by her mentor Robert Altman, has died. She was 73.

Duvall died Thursday at her home in Blanco, Texas, her partner Dan Gilroy confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was given.

Duvall was best known for her role as Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic "The Shining." Her performance as the terrorized wife of Jack Nicholson's character is considered one of the most iconic horror performances of all time.

Duvall also starred in Altman's "3 Women" (1977), "Nashville" (1975), "Thieves Like Us" (1974), "California Split" (1974), "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" (1971), and "Brewster McCloud" (1970).

Duvall's career began in the early 1970s when she was discovered by Altman. She quickly became one of his favorite actresses, and he often cast her in eccentric, offbeat roles.

In recent years, Duvall had largely retired from acting. She made a brief appearance in the 2016 horror film "The Forest."
