As of August 8, 2021, the United States leads the medal count at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo with 113 total medals, including 39 gold medals. China and Japan follow closely behind with 88 and 58 total medals, respectively.
The host nation, Japan, has performed exceptionally well, exceeding expectations and securing 27 gold medals. Notably, Japan has captured the gold in judo, one of its traditional martial arts, in five different weight classes for both men and women.
Other nations that have made a strong showing include the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) with 56 medals, Great Britain with 54 medals, and Australia with 46 medals. Notably, Australia has won 17 gold medals, their highest ever total at an Olympic Games.
