US Airline Flights Grounded Due to Technical Issue
FAA Lifts Ground Stop After System Outage
Communication Issues Impact Major Airlines
On Friday morning, all flights from several major US airlines including Delta, United, and American Airlines were grounded due to a technical issue. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop, prohibiting all departing flights, after experiencing an outage to its NOTAM (Notice to Air Missions) system. This system provides critical safety information for pilots, including hazards, restrictions, and other important notices.
The FAA lifted the ground stop several hours later, but the issue continued to impact flights throughout the day. American, Delta, and United Airlines reported delays and cancellations as a result of the communications problems. American Airlines stated that the issue had affected its ability to send and receive messages to and from its aircraft, while Delta reported delays in uploading flight plans.
The FAA said it was working to restore the system and apologized for the disruption to air travel. The outage comes just two weeks after hundreds of thousands of travelers were stranded by an operational meltdown at Southwest Airlines, the country's largest low-cost carrier. Southwest's problems were caused by a combination of factors, including weather and staffing shortages.
