AG rebukes repeated threats against Justice Department

Attorney General Merrick Garland is expected to slam repeated threats against the Justice Department and its employees during a speech at the National Sheriffs' Association on Wednesday.
The speech comes amid a heated debate over the department's investigation into the January 6 Capitol riot. Some Republicans have accused Garland of politicizing the investigation and have threatened to impeach him if they regain control of the House in the midterm elections.
In his speech, Garland is expected to defend the department's work and to warn against the dangers of political interference in law enforcement.
"The rule of law is the foundation of our democracy," Garland is expected to say. "We cannot allow it to be undermined by threats or intimidation."
Garland's speech is likely to further inflame tensions between the Justice Department and Republicans in Congress. It is also likely to provide a preview of the political battles that could erupt if Republicans regain control of the House.
