In a major shake-up within the fashion industry, Virginie Viard has departed from her role as artistic director of fashion collections at Chanel. Viard's exit marks the end of a five-year tenure that saw her lead the brand through several significant collections and fashion shows.
Viard's departure comes after a period of change and uncertainty within the fashion world. The industry has been grappling with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the changing consumer landscape. Viard's exit is just one of several high-profile departures from major fashion houses in recent months.
Viard's departure from Chanel is a significant loss for the brand. She was appointed creative director in 2019 following the death of German designer Karl Lagerfeld. Viard quickly made her mark on Chanel, introducing a fresh and modern aesthetic to the brand while still respecting its classic heritage.
Under Viard's leadership, Chanel staged some of its most memorable fashion shows in recent years. These included the fall-winter 2020-2021 womens collection, which was presented at the Grand Palais in Paris. The show featured a star-studded cast of models, including Gigi Hadid and Kaia Gerber, and was praised for its modern and sophisticated take on classic Chanel silhouettes.
Viard's departure from Chanel leaves the brand at a crossroads. It will be interesting to see who will be appointed as her successor and what direction the brand will take under new leadership.
